Haydock High Remembrance Service

On Friday 11th November over 60 members of the community, teachers and students representing the school and uniformed organisations gathered to remember the fallen soldiers of Haydock and Parr.The Drama Theatre and the Remembrance Garden in front of the School's Art block, which was originally the Haydock Memorial Library in honour of the fallen, were decorated with images by Year 8 students who have been studying World War I and World War II in lessons, as well as students from the Ablaze club which is run by Mrs Sandra Morris. The service was led by Paul Cliff from Ebenezer Independent Methodist Church. Students from both Grange Valley Primary School and Haydock High School read poems, prayers and the names of the fallen. Wreaths were laid by students and a 2 minute silence silence was observed whilst poppies fell from the Drama Theatre balconies.Our service was followed by a moving Drama performance called "The Smile", which was presented by Drama students from Years 8, 9 and 10. Our thanks go to the cast and Mrs Marsh for all their hard work performing their piece in assemblies throughout the week and at the Remembrance Service.Following the Drama performance, our talented students from the Music department entertained the visitors with a variety of songs and musical pieces, performed by a variety of vocalists and a variety of instruments. Many people commented on the excellent Dramatic and Musical talent at Haydock High School. The service closed with a solo vocal performance of "Stars" from Les Miserables, sung by Year 10 student Adam Baldwin, which many visitors admitted had moved them to tears.The visitors were then served lunch and tea by the students, signifying the lovely relationship between Haydock High and our community.Our thanks go to Mrs Dixon, Mrs Ashburner, Mrs Morris, Mrs Fletcher, Mrs Marsh, Mr Cliff and Mr Carter for all their hard work and for making the event such a success. We would also like to give a special thank you to Mr Rouch, the Grandfather of our Year 8 student Dylan Rouch, for coming into the school and sharing his experiences of World War II with our students.
