Rugby League history made at Haydock High School
Never before have two groups at Haydock High School won the St Helens Town Cup in the same year!
On Wednesday 11th May, the Year 9 and Year 10 boys' rugby teams won in convincing fashion at the St Helens Town Cup final at Langtree Park, the home of ‘The Saints’. The day started well with a 26 - 4 victory for the Year 9s against De La Salle, with tries coming from prop forward Elliot Martin, second row Adam Pender, hooker Reiss Mullen and two opening tries from winger Corey Chappell. The result was hard fought and eventually Haydock extended their lead in the second half after a very close encounter in the first. Excellent performances came from Corey Chappell and Ryan Appleton to name a few but they were just pipped to the post for the ‘Man of the Match’ by centre Callum Gibbons.
The day got even better after the Year 10s thrashed Rainford High 66 - 6. The result came after a successful but very hard year for the Year 10s. They just missed out on North West Counties glory after losing in the last minute of golden point in the final and were knocked out in the round before the quarter finals in the national ‘Champion Schools’ competition. There was a flurry of tries from a number of players in the squad in both halves of the game but the plaudits must go to both Harry McCormick who played his first game after a long term injury and ‘Man of the Match’ Matty Foster.
A special mention must go to former student Matt Johnston who has been coming back to school to help in the boys training sessions and on match days.
