Students Rear Painted Lady Butterflies

Once again Year 7 students have reared their very own Painted Lady butterflies and have enjoyed watching the full life cycle from caterpillar, chrysalis and finally butterfly!

The special kit was purchased from Insect Lore, and provided a close up look at how much a caterpillar grows each day in its own special viewing pot, complete with food.

Each caterpillar was given to a student, who watched in amazement as the fully grown caterpillar then suspended itself from the top of the pot in a ‘J’ shape and made a chrysalis. The chrysalises were then very carefully placed inside the viewing net. After 7-10 days, each butterfly emerged providing us with amazing close-ups of how butterflies behave once they have emerged.

"It was amazing" said one student, "I watched a butterfly come out of its chrysalis, and the wings were still folded up"

Another student said "It was cracking! I felt it was my own pet before we set them free!"

The sun shone brilliantly as the students set the butterflies free in July, bringing a cascade of colour to the small garden in the quad area of the school grounds. Some students were very confident in getting the butterflies on their hands and placing them onto the flowers in the garden. Others were a little apprehensive and jumped when they tickled their hand!

All of the students experienced something new when they set them free. Some of the butterflies were still in the garden the next day too!
