Remembrance Service at Haydock High School
On Friday 10th November 2017, Haydock High School held its Annual Remembrance Service for members of the Haydock community. This, the eleventh annual service, was attended by over 60 members of the community, school governors Mr Rouch and Mrs Dolan, Mrs Wright (Deputy Headteacher) and Mr Sheeran (Headteacher).
The service was led by Revd Paul Cliff, minister from Haydock Ebenezer Independent Methodist Church. Revd Cliff was assisted in the service by Head Girl Izzy Corfield and Head Boy Jack Davies, who read the names of the fallen soldiers from Haydock and Parr. Students Harry Hussain and Liam Turton, attending in their cadet uniforms, were our Union Jack flag standard bearer and poppy wreath bearer. Other poppy wreaths were laid by Grange Valley Primary School who also read poems and 92 year old Mrs Holmes, a member of the community whose fiancé was one of the fallen Haydock soldiers remembered every year. Year 10 student Phoebe Kay played a moving rendition of the last post on the saxophone, wearing her cadet uniform, and other students attended in their scouting uniforms, Tom Hornby from 18th St Helens Scouts being their standard bearer.
At 11am the congregation, along with the whole school, stopped for our two minutes silence as poppy petals fell from the balcony, thrown by Mrs Sandra Morris (youth pastor) and students. At the end of the service our school choir sang a moving song called ‘A Wish for Peace’ bringing our service to a close.
Immediately after the service, drama students performed an insightful and dramatic performance about the history of the poppy, a drama they had previously performed to all year groups in school assemblies that week.
Following the sombre morning, visitors were entertained by some of our musicians, James Melia on piano, Isabelle Nash on vocals and ukulele and a duet from Adam Baldwin on vocals and Tom Aspinall on guitar. Visitors were then treated to a delicious array of sandwiches from the Pit Stop Deli, as well as tea and cakes all served by our students. Visitors also had the opportunity to view the art exhibition created especially by Year 8 students on the theme of war which decorated the Drama Theatre. The Art department had also created a special installation outside the Haydock War Memorial Library (which is now the Art department building) depicting poppies and the unknown soldier.
A selection of the art work created by Year 8 students is now on display in the new Haydock Library until Friday 17th November.

Haydock Curriculum
The pace of curriculum change continues to accelerate, for example introducing a more flexible Key Stage 3. Our constant planning offers confidence for successful delivery and assessment of these areas.
Over the last few years we have been successful in achieving Sportsmark, Investors in People, Artsmark, Careers and Guidance and Healthy Schools accreditation. We were also awarded the accolade of a ‘Get Set’ school in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics.

Haydock Leisure Centre
Facilities With a £250,000 refurbishment in 2006, the PE department and Leisure Centre were refurbished to accommodate more people and classes, offering a wide range of activities to students and the wider community. The changing rooms are of a high standard with disabled access, automatic showers and private cubicles. Sports Hall The Sports Hall can accommodate the following: 5 a side football, whole Sports Hall Cricket, whole Sports Hall Badminton, whole or half Sports Hall Keep Fit and much more.
