Haydock High School Celebrates Duke of Edinburgh Award Success

On Tuesday 21st March, Haydock High School hosted an assembly to celebrate the current Year 11’s success participating in the Duke of Edinburgh award. 35 out of 37 students completed the award, cementing Haydock High as the school with the highest percentage pass rate in the North West region.
The award itself consists of 4 distinct challenges: skills, physical, volunteering and expedition. Some students volunteered in school, whilst other students volunteered in the local community. For their skills, students had to show that they had committed to improving their skills in a certain area, be that cooking or art. For their physical, the students had to improve in a physical aspect of their lives, be that football or swimming.
The students went on two separate, two-day expeditions in Lancashire and Shropshire, where they had to be totally self-sufficient, ultimately learning several different skills such as map reading, camp-craft and the Countryside Code. The expeditions are there to hone these skills, but also to build resilience, teamwork and self-management. Friendships and bonds were also developed and strengthened.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a prestigious award that is highly valued by both Colleges and employers, because it shows dedication to self-development as well as development of teamwork skills. Everyone at Haydock High would like to congratulate the students for their hard work and dedication during their time attempting to complete the award, and we hope that they will now build from this and pursue their Silver or Gold award in years to come.
We would also like to thank the hard work and dedication of Mr Hughes, Mr Hopkins, Mrs Shaw and Mrs Kay, who willingly gave their time at weekends to support the students both on expeditions and throughout the time the students were completing other aspects of the award.
