Christmas Market

On Thursday 17th December Haydock High School held a Community Christmas event throughout the day which involved students, primary school pupils and the community. In the morning primary school children took part in an English class based around Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". Year 10 students Hannah Ranson, Hanni Thwaite, Melissa Travis and Jamie Crawford helped the pupils to learn all about Scrooge from the story. They also thought about what Christmas meant to them and made gift boxes and decorated them to spread love and happiness. This was to show the pupils that Christmas isn't always about presents but about being with your family and friends. In the Drama Theatre Year 11 students performed a piece based on the hit TV show 'Gogglebox' and some Year 8 students danced to Michael Buble's 'Holly Jolly Christmas'. Pupils were able to purchase homemade items such as paintings, cupcakes and candle holders from the market. Finally, a school at a time, the pupils were able to meet Santa and his elf, where they were given a small present.

During lunchtime Haydock High students were able to visit the market and buy items and there was also a small music and dance performance. At 2pm members of the community arrived and they sang along to 'Silent Night' and 'Hark the Herald' accompanied by the brass band. After the performances they made their way into the LRC for sandwiches and drinks followed by a game of bingo. The market stalls offered various crafts items for sale including, candles, decorations, Christmas cards, bookmarks, cakes and keyrings. It was well supported by staff and students alike and helped to get everyone feeling that little bit more Christmassy. The event was able to go ahead thanks to Year 11 students Joshua Killilea and Caitlin Corrigan who were successful with their 'Community Christmas' project with O2 Think Big and secured £300 funding for the event.

Many thanks to all those who supported the event which raised over £600. Students are now in discussions about where the money will be used for the next community project.
