Burial of Haydock High School's skeleton
On Thursday 3rd December, a skeleton which has resided within the school for many years was finally laid to rest. The skeleton - which is missing both arms and a leg - was used for many years in the Science and Art departments and was later put in storage and replaced by a plastic version. The burial took place at Greenacres Woodland Burials in Rainford following a service at the school organised by funeral director Bill Craddock at Haydock Funeral Services.
The skeleton was buried in a bamboo coffin supplied free of charge by the funeral directors, who also provided a hearse and bearers for the service. Greenacres Woodland Burials also provided his burial plot for free.
The funeral took place at 10am, led by Mr Craddock, Interfaith Minister Deirdre Brannigan, Greenacres Park Manager Karen Halpin, Haydock High School technician Sandra Dixon and students from the school.
Year 9 students formed a guard of honour as the coffin was driven away from the school in the hearse with some students following on in the school minibus accompanied by Head of Art Mrs Ashburner and Art technician Mrs Dixon.
The images show the skeleton leaving school and also how it had inspired artwork during its time at the school.
